Home Visitor and Telephone Reassurance Volunteer Programs


Senior and Adult Services provides services to more than 32,000 members of our community who are at risk of abuse and/or neglect or who are unable to manage their own affairs.  These programs with the help of our volunteers will provide companionship to our most vulnerable seniors and help them to remain safely in their homes.  Volunteers will provide additional support in assisting them with transportation, recreation and community resources, and other activities agreed upon by both the client and volunteer.  


 

Who can volunteer?

Anyone over 21 years of age and can donate 1-3 hours a day, Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am to 4 pm; Interested candidtaes should enjoy working with seniors and older adults; be compassionate, nurturing, dependable and a good listener.  A volunteer must pass a criminal background check. All volunteers will be required to submit a DMV driving record.


 

Where do volunteers work?

Homes of seniors of Sacramento County. Priorities are given to the clients of In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) and Adult Protective Services. 


What kind of work is done?

Home Visitors – Schedule visits to frail, isolated, elderly and/or disabled seniors of Sacramento County IHSS and APS clients with kindness, consideration and respect at all times.  Provide transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, libraries, senior centers, etc.  Volunteers also provide resource materials and referrals to volunteer programs.

Telephone Reassurance - provide support by placing a call to a senior client at a scheduled time to check on their well-being and refer any client concerns to a designated SVS staff.

 

Benefits of Volunteering 

Make an impact on client's lives, meet new people and share life experiences; training and support provided.  A volunteer also receives a $3.00/day stipend.  A volunteer who drives as part of their volunteer job also receives a mileage reimbursement and is covered by supplemental automobile liability insurance.
